Commercial Landscaping Awards 2004
Salem Garden Club is pleased to announce Commercial Landscaping Awards for 2004. Awards will be presented to six Salem businesses on Tuesday, August 10th at 7 p.m. at the Salem Town Hall, prior to the regular Planning Board meeting.
The Commercial Awards Committee, Arlene Brown, Claudia Bruce, Linda Dobson, Lauretta French, Sharon Melanson, and Town Planning Director, Ross Moldoff, toured numerous commercial sites throughout Salem before selecting this year's winners. Six businesses were selected for their use of color, texture, and interesting plant materials in creating a beautiful visual display, often in a very small space.. Designs incorporating drought tolerant plants and water conservation measures are always of special interest to the committee.
This year's award winners are: Glenn's Kreme and Kone (146 Main Street) - A newly created stone flowerbed filled with colorful annuals, perennials, and shrubs enhances the outdoor ambiance of this popular ice cream shop; Furniture World (419 South Broadway) - Colorful shrub and flower beds in shades of purple, lavender, and green line the grass separating the parking lot form the street; Mike's Sunoco (2 North Broadway) - Masses of brightly colored annuals in barrels and a brick planting bed light up this very small space at a very busy intersection; Dr. James Rhodes (225 Main Street) - This colorful cottage garden includes hundreds of old fashioned blooms, such as zinnias and sunflowers, drawing the attention of all who pass by; Shyres Lobster Pound (280 South Broadway) - This neat and well-maintained shrub and perennial bed provides an eye-pleasing barrier between the parking lot and busy Route 28; T-Bones Restaurant (311 South Broadway) - Graceful, colorful hanging baskets are displayed in front and neat shrub and flower beds surround this busy restaurant offering patrons a pleasant place to wait for a table.
